Flood the Roundhouse Letter Writing Event
HB 130 was passed last year and included a requirement that public school students would have a mandated (and increased) number of hours in the classroom. Unfortunately, our PED has interpreted that bill to include homeschoolers. CAPE-NM is working to meet with the PED and reverse that interpretation.
Our 2024 goal is to get a letter to each one of the Representatives and Senators in the Roundhouse this year to challenge the idea that homeschools are the same as public schools and would need mandated hours targets. We need your help even if you can’t attend CAPE @ the Capitol!
Please write a letter (or two) to your legislators (or any other legislators) that details what a homeschool day looks like in your home, especially when it comes to how long it takes to teach your children. If you have younger children, or have homeschooled younger children, a reminder of how long it actually takes to do work at that level (that keeps children engaged and loving learning) would also be impactful.
Students and former homeschoolers are also encouraged to write letters documenting their own experiences with homeschool hours.
You are welcome to sign letters with only your first name and initial, but it is especially helpful to have letters for legislators that come from people in their voting area.
We will deliver letters to your legislators even if you can’t attend. Please contact Erin at erin.ffr@cape-nm.org for more information.
Send your letters to the Roundhouse at 490 Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe, NM 87501.
